How Switching From Medicare Plan F to Plan G Could Save You Money

If you’ve had Medicare Supplement Plan F for years, you probably chose it for a good reason. It’s simple. You show your card, and your plan covers the gaps that Original Medicare leaves behind.

But that convenience may cost more than it needs to. For many long-time enrollees, switching to Plan G is one of the easiest ways to trim health care costs without giving up the coverage they rely on.

Understanding What Sets Plan F Apart

Medicare Supplement plans, also called Medigap, help pay costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, such as deductibles, coinsurance, copays and certain excess charges from doctors.

Plan F has long been known as the most complete option. It pays for nearly everything Original Medicare leaves behind, including the annual Part B deductible.

Plan G covers the same benefits as Plan F with one exception. It doesn’t pay the Part B deductible. Once you’ve paid that deductible yourself, Plan G picks up the remaining covered costs just as Plan F would.

There’s another important detail. Federal law closed Plan F to people who became eligible for Medicare at the start of this decade or later. Only those who were eligible before that change can keep or buy it. Because no new enrollees are joining, the group of Plan F members is getting older on average, which can push premiums higher over time.

    Doing the Simple Math

The question comes down to a quick comparison.

First, look at what you pay for Plan F over a full year. Next, get a quote for Plan G. Then subtract the Plan G premium from the Plan F premium. Finally, compare that difference with the Part B deductible.

If the yearly premium savings are larger than the deductible, switching puts money back in your budget. In many cases, the gap is wide enough that the savings clearly outweigh the deductible you’d now pay out of pocket.

Think of it this way. With Plan F, you’re paying the insurance company every month to cover a small, predictable bill. With Plan G, you pay that bill yourself and keep the rest of the difference.

Because the Part B deductible is set by Medicare each year and is fairly modest, it’s easy to plan for. Many people simply set that amount aside early in the year and stop worrying about it.

Those savings repeat every year you stay on the lower premium.

Getting Help From a Trusted Adviser

Switching plans isn’t hard, but the details matter.

Rates vary by insurer, age, ZIP code and household discounts. Some companies offer savings for paying annually, setting up automatic payments, going paperless or having another household member on a plan. An experienced agency can compare these factors side by side so you see the true cost of each option.

That’s why it helps to work with a trusted, established agency such as Benefit Packages, which has helped Californians with Medicare and health coverage for decades. An independent agency can review your current plan, compare Plan G rates from multiple carriers, point out discounts you may qualify for and help you time the switch correctly, typically at no cost to you.

When choosing an adviser, look for someone who explains your options clearly, compares more than one insurer, answers questions without pressure and stays available after you enroll.

Timing Your Switch the Right Way

In most states, changing Medigap plans after your initial enrollment period can require medical underwriting. That means an insurer may review your health history and could decline your application.

California offers an important advantage. Under the state’s birthday rule, eligible Medigap policyholders get a window each year that opens on their birthday. During that time, they can switch to a plan with equal or lesser benefits without medical underwriting. Because Plan G offers slightly fewer benefits than Plan F, many enrollees can use this window to make the change.

Before switching, confirm that your new policy is approved before you cancel your old one. That way, you never go without coverage.

A small change in how you handle one annual deductible can lead to real savings. For many long-time Plan F members, reviewing Plan G is a smart, low-risk step toward keeping more money in their pocket each year.
